Durango Biking Adventures

Biking trails abound in Durango. It seems that everyone has a mountain bike, in different stages of dirtiness. The Durango area offers hard-core mountain biking in the surrounding San Juans just 20 miles north, to cruising through the southwestern deserts, just 30 miles south.

Starting June 15, Durango Mountain resort is open to biking from 9am-4:30pm with a single uplift for $5 and an all-day uplift for $15.

If you didn't bring a bike, don't sweat it. There are several shops offering rentals, tours, and maps.

Easy road bike loops include Baker's Bridge, which is a 30-mile loop that begins on North Main Avenue at City Market. Trimble Loop is a shortened version beginning at County Road 250, for a total of about 15 miles.

For intermediate trails on your road bike, try Elmore's Loop, which is about 26 miles beginning on Historical 3rd Avenue. Or do the Durango/Bayfield Loop, which is about 45 miles long with a few steep climbs.

Advanced road bike rides include Durango to Silverton, which is 50 miles one way and includes two mountain passes; the Wildcat Canyon Loop which is 35 miles long; or Durango to Pagosa Springs, which is 60 miles, one-way.

Easy mountain bike rides include the Horse Gulch Trail, with the trail head starting at 8th Avenue and 3rd Street, or the Lime Creek Trail, which is the old stage coach road between Purgatory and Silverton.

For more adventuresome mountain bikers, there's the Hermosa Creek Trail, one of the most popular single-track trails in Durango. The trail leads from DMR/Purgatory Mountain to Hermosa and is about a 20-mile ride. A dirt road takes you to the trailhead located on the backside of Purgatory. Check out the Telegraph and Test Tracks trail systems in downtown Durango. Other advanced rides include The Colorado Trail - Hoffheins Connection, a 20-mile single-track loop, or the La Plata Canyon Road.
