Snowmass is bursting with activities and adventures this summer. A popular area event is the Snowmass Balloon Festival. Once you've seen it, you'll know why.

If you're in Snowmass Sept. 12 to 14 make sure you look up. A series of hot-air balloon competitions are held during that time, all free to spectators. The Colorado Rate Race balloon race extends the length of the Roaring Fork Valley as pilots lift off in Snowmass and then race down valley to rack up the most miles in a 3-hour time period. The event was named after a long-time pilot competitor whose hot air maneuverings earned him the nickname of "Dirty Rat" until the year he showed up with a huge rat emblazoned on the side of his balloon. Race starts at the Snowmass Softball Field across from the Rodeo on Brush Creek Road. Don't miss evening Balloon Glow and barbecue and Target Tubing.
