Fishing the Berkshires

Berkshires_fishing.jpg

If you can't stand to leave the Berkshires without wetting a line, no problem. There are plenty of places to fish, and your innkeeper may be able to cook your catch. Fishing is one of the more popular summer activities in the Berkshires, and for good reason. The various bodies of water in the county are home to many species of sportfish. From the sunfish and perch, always favorites among the younger anglers, to trout, crappie, bass (large and smallmouth), pike and even tiger muskies, you can probably find your favorite quarry in Berkshire County.

Everyone age 15 and over must have a fishing license, which is available at sporting goods stores, city or town clerks, or the Division of Fisheries and Wildlife, (413 447-9789; http://www.sport.state.ma.us), 400 Hubbard Avenue, Pittsfield.

Public fishing locations include Onota & Pontoosuc Lakes, Pittsfield; Cheshire Reservoir, Cheshire; Thousand Acre Swamp, New Marlboro; Prospect Lake, Egremont; Benton Pond and East Otis Reservoir, Otis; and Richmond Pond, Richmond.
