They don't just like to fish here, they love to fish. It's a science, it's a passion. Try it.

The Great Lakes are known for sport fishing for Coho and Chinook salmon, lake trout, walleye, and whitefish. Charter fishing boats can be found in just about all the lakeside communities along both coasts. For a free directory of boat charters for fishing, contact the Michigan Charter Boat Association at 800-622-2971 or visit http://www.micharterboats.com

Michigan is also home to a vast fly-fishing industry that rivals legendary Montana for the sport. This is where Ernest Hemmgway first fell in love with the sport, and wrote his Nick Adam series of books on the subject. You'll find several blue ribbon trout streams here. The most famous, the South Branch of the Au Sable River, is located just east of Grayling on M-72. Fly- fishers refer to this stretch of river as "the holy waters."

Hot spots for numerous fly-fishing shops, guides and information are Traverse City, Baldwin, and Grayling. Contact the Chambers of Commerce/Area Visitors Council for additional information: Traverse City (231-947-5075); Baldwin (231-745-4331); and Grayling (800-937-8837).
