Cass Railroad State Park: Here's a restored railroad station, country store, and lodging. These are trains with steam locomotives that kept the mountain timber industry chugging in the 19th and early 20th centuries. This is the last remaining segment of the massive lumber railroad network that once covered virtually every valley and mountain of Pocahontas County. The railroad has both eight- mile and 22-mile trips. For more information, visit http://www.cassrailroad.com

D & G Valley Railroad: Explore the wild heart of West Virginia aboard Durbin & Greenbrier Railroad's (877-686-7245; http://www.mountainrail.com) three trains: the steam-powered Durbin Rocket, the Cheat Mountain Salamander, a self-propelled rail car, or the diesel-powered New Tygart Flyer. The trains travel into some of the more remote sections of the Monongahela National Forest. Reservations are a must.
