A Ghost Story In Stowe

Make a midnight visit to Gold Brook Bridge, a.k.a. Stowe Hollow Bridge, Stowe's famed haunted span. The covered, wooden bridge was built by one John W. Smith in 1844, however, to locals it is better known as "Emily's Bridge."

The story goes that, forbidden by her family to marry, a young Stowe woman planned to elope with her lover. The pair were to meet at the fateful bridge late at night, and so she went there to wait. After the appointed time expired with no sign of him, she apparently grew despondent at her abandonment and hanged herself from a rafter beam, taking her own life.

It is said that her lonely spirit resides there still, awaiting the appearance of her mate.
