There are at least 32,000 Km (or 19,884 miles) of streams and rivers and 839 square Km (521 square miles) of lakes in Switzerland, so make sure to pack a fishing rod on those treks through this wondrous country.

Each canton (state) is responsible for issuing fishing permits, and the regulations vary according to the area and to whether the permit is for lake or river fishing. Angling techniques and bait must be suited to the particular water one happens to be fishing, but for the most part, fly-fishing, spinning, and ground fishing are permitted in most waters.
Permits sold allow fishing for a single day, a week, a month or a full year. The permit rates vary from canton to canton, and a permit must be bought specific to each fishing area, as there are different prices for each lake and river. Be sure to inquire at a hotel or tourist office.
The most common fish are char, pike, perch and trout, which have been known to weigh up to 10 kilograms (22 lbs.).
Pass a lake and you'll see natives in their small motorboats. Rent one in the lakes of the Italian-speaking province of Ticino. There are also guided fishing expeditions.
